I've had a MJ for a couple years now. In the beginning I had lousy audio and frequent dropped calls. Then I realized that it needed more dedicated CPU time. So in the Windows (I have XP) task manager (just click control-alt-delete) I clicked on the the Processes tab. Go down the list to find magicJack.exe and right click. A small box should pop open. Click on Set Priority and another little box will open up. I usually click High and then a warning box pops up asking if you REALLY want to make the change. Say yes and try a phone call.
I was amazed at the improved call quality. Just wish I knew how to make the change stick... it will revert to the standard setting the next time you restart your PC.

Oh and I love the idea of a small laptop powering the MJ. I was going to buy the new "plus" just to have it off my PC but I've seen the renewal prices are way up there.

Thanks to this forum, I will now look into the 50 call limit. But, I thought I'd share a little success with MJ.
I've been using it, if you call it that, for about 4 years now and declared on my last renewal, that it was the last unless something drastically changed. It worked at best sporadically and the call quality s__cked.
I was given a fairly new laptop with a cracked screen, so it was not worth fixing to the owner and I already have one.
Got the idea to try MJ on it. (used the vga port for access). I cleaned the machine so nothing else is running in the background and only MJ is running. I tucked it in a corner, connected it by ethernet cable, Wireless didnt work well enough, and it has been perfect ever since. It should be good till the hard drive fails but only the cost of the electric is now my additional charge. I also setup a 'log me in' account and access it remotely even though it is sitting right here. And of course, I only use my phone to access it. I dont use the contact list or any feature on the software. Hoping for the best or I am done.

When renewing for a new year, upon paying the money you inadvertantly agreed to their new terms. However, what does it matter to any of you what they use their phone for as long as it doesn't affect you? Why does everyone always have to be concerned about what other people do? How is it abuse to make over 50 calls in a day? So what... Take the side of the company, they're worse than Netflix doubling their rates on everyone...

With Magic Jack your computer has to be on and connected to the internet at all times, right?

People, I thought it was obvious that MJ was for personal, not business. It says on the TV add "replace your HOME PHONE.....". The only time i have ever made anywhere near 50 personal phone calls was when there was a death in the family. There are many cheap , effective voip solutions for a business. if you are making money, expect to pay some money. is MJ a perfect thing? ABSOLUTELY NOT! but come on, the darn thing cost less per month than the surcharges alone on my cellphone! If You Want Perfection Pay For It. my 2 cents are now spent.

I have no sympathy for anyone who thought they were getting a high-volume business line for these prices, or the ability to use it for telemarketing. Damn right, that's abuse.

I haven't had many problems but what I don't like is that they advertise it as an unlimited plan but they hang the call after first 2 hours and now one hour, after that I normally would call back but now they won't let the call pass after a while.

Yes, it was written in their Terms of Service that customer's should not make more than 50 calls everyday.

Yeah...I have myself just had this "service suspension" (really, an effective termination) on several magic jacks I have had between July 20 and 22, 2010.

I've had these - with the same calling patterns and volumn of use in my business, for OVER a year! It was only after I paid for an annual renewal that, within 30 days of getting my money, that they've done this! If I was a problem, why didn't they warn me first and terminate me -- long before this? And why does their website - to this day - explicitly say "call all you want". And THAT with no qualifier or footnote even!!!

Sounds like MagicJack has suddenly wanted to: 1) Minimize their capacity needs; and, 2) Greatly increase their revenue with more magic jack purchases (to "spread the load" of the customer to avoid such B.S. of a 50 calls a day limit). SHAME ON THEM!!!

By the way, they point to their separate fine print. But I can assure you, I READ IT WHEN I STARTED SERVICE MAY AND JUNE, 2009 -- AND THEY CHANGED THEIR FINE PRINT TO PUT THOSE TERMS IN (50 CALLS AND EXCESSIVE USE) WHILE FAILING TO NOTIFY ME OF ANY CHANGE! And NOW they are attempted to refuse to refund or reach other accomodation with me since they in the last month had DUPED me into paying them more money??? Sorry, Charlie.

I'm right now disputing these charges with my credit card company. Knowing how all of these firms work, I'll probably lose somehow and have to pay. But I figure this: If just HALF of those being screwed by magic jack put them thru the time and expense of addressing these disputed charges, Magic Jack will STOP trying to screw the customer in this way! I urge all reading this in similar fashion to dispute your credit card charges for them!
